Being a son or daughter of a foster carer is a unique experience and as the family transforms into a fostering family, they play a vital part in the task of fostering. When the whole family fosters, everyone needs support and training, and the role children play in helping other children has often been overlooked.

There is little research into how fostering affects birth children, but here at OwnLife, we fully acknowledge that we are working with the whole family.

We ask the children what they think about living in a fostering family, what they like and what they would change, and if they need any support. We have events and activity days that include the birth children and the fostered children, like bowling and crazy golf, picnics and Christmas parties. Do share pictures of your baked creations with us on Facebook.

Sons and Daughters month

October is the month we celebrate the huge impact sons and daughters have in the fostering task. This annual campaign by the Fostering Network celebrates the contribution that the children of foster carers make to foster care. Each year sees the campaign support a specific theme – this year is about #FosteringTeachesYou. The Fostering Network explains: “The sons and daughters of foster carers play an essential role in welcoming fostered children into their families and ensuring successful fostering placements.”

Why not read more about the campaign on social media via #FosteringTeachesYou and share with your friends and family.

The Fostering Network is also running a competition for children and young people in fostering households, asking them to share what they have learned as a result of their fostering experiences. This can either be a written piece, photograph, piece of art or video by simply answering – what #FosteringTeachesYou.

And, so we are also encouraging birth children to be creative and express their experiences in poetry, drawing and art.

So, a big THANK YOU to all the families who foster, and very special contribution the children make.
