A key part of a foster carer’s role is ongoing development. Foster carers will regularly attend training courses as it’s a requirement to evidence all new skills.

Initially foster carers will take courses to understand the role as well as the principles and values in fostering. These will cover topics such as:

  • Communication
  • Child development
  • Diversity and identity
  • Health and safety
  • Safeguarding

A specific training support and development programme is agreed to help with a foster carer’s own personal development.

Training for foster carers

We regularly organise these training sessions for our foster carers and have already planned the courses for this year. Since COVID-19 forced everyone to work remotely that too meant our training sessions went online. Our foster carers have certainly warmed to the new virtual approach to training and are finding it fits neatly into their routine.

Coming up in the next few months we’ll be covering a range of topics including:

  • Understanding trauma
  • Understanding attachment
  • Contact and birth families
  • Adverse childhood experiences
